MDSG AGM 2024
The next AGM of the Mineral Deposits Studies Group will be jointly hosted by the University of Edinburgh and the British Geological Survey at the Surgeons Quarter in January 2024.
The technical meeting will open on Wednesday the 3rd of January with an icebreaker at The Scotsman (Sponsored by BHP). Keynote talks, technical sessions, and poster sessions will occur on Thursday and Friday the 4th and 5th of January. All lunches and morning/afternoon refreshments, and the conference dinner are included in the registration cost. The main conference (4th and 5th Jan) will be at the Surgeons Quarter in the heart of Edinburgh city, a 10 minute walk from Waverley Train Station.
Workshop: The pre-conference workshop on Magmatic Ni-Cu Mineral Systems in Europe will occur on the 3rd January (9.30am-4.30pm). Due to a large amount of interest, the workshop has moved to the Surgeons Quarter venue. Space is limited to 50 participants – a list of registrants who can attend the workshop will be circulated. Priority will be given to students and early-career professionals. Confirmed speakers include Prof. Dave Holwell (Professor of Sustainable Mineral Resources, University of Leicester), Andrew Tunningley (Head of Exploration, Kingsrose Mining Limited; ASX: KRM), Fraser Gardiner (CEO, Aberdeen Minerals Limited), Josh Hughes (Vice President of Exploration, Bluejay Mining; LSE: JAY). The time and other speakers will be announced shortly.
Prizes: There will be prizes for the Best Student Talk (sponsored and awarded by Rio Tinto), Best Student Poster, Best Student Masters-level Project (sponsored by the Applied Mineralogy Group), and Best Mineral Systems Talk (sponsored by Halliburton).
Keynotes: We are pleased to announce four excellent keynote speakers at the event – Rohitesh Dhawan (President and CEO of ICMM – the International Council on Mining and Metals), Libby Sharman (BHP), Christopher Lofthouse (Department for Business and Trade), and MDSG ECR Distinguished Lecturer Dr Aileen Doran.
Social events (included in registration fee): on January 3rd an evening icebreaker event (sponsored by BHP) will be held at the iconic Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh old town. The conference dinner will take place at the Intercontinental George Hotel on George Street, in Edinburgh new town, on the evening of Thursday the 4th of January.
Abstracts and registration: We welcome abstract submissions on any topic relevant to the MDSG community to ensure interesting and inspiring technical sessions. We will have 10 min talk slots (with additional time for questions) and poster sessions.
We will have poster sessions (Sponsored by Rio Tinto) on both the Thursday and Friday to allow as many people as possible, especially students, to have the opportunity to present and benefit from feedback from the community. All posters should be A0 format in portrait mode.

Registration fees are:
- £120 student price (undergraduate, masters level, PhD students)
- £250 full price
Registration fees are slightly higher than previous years due to increased costs associated with venue hire/catering. However, we have offset much of this through sponsorship.
Accommodation: The conference will take place within the centre of Edinburgh city. There are lots of choices of accommodation to suit every budget. These include Ten Hill Place at Surgeons Quarter, plus multiple cheaper options such as Ibis, Travelodge, PremierInn, Holiday Inn Express, all located less than a 10 minute walk from the conference venue.
Travel: Edinburgh is accessible by air from most major cities in the UK. There is a regular airport tram which goes directly into the city centre. The icebreaker, conference and dinner venues are all located a short distance from Waverley train station if you wish to travel to the conference by rail. Parking in Edinburgh can be expense. Please book early if you intend to drive and leave your car in the city.
